The year started with much promise. By its end, some promises were kept, others not so much. There were surprises, joys and sorrows…as expected, there was a little of everything. I walked frozen streets covered in snow, darkened by tall modern buildings. I also walked ancient cobblestone roads adorned by overgrown vegetation amidst colonial and pre-colonial ruins. I met good people with whom we shared unforgettable moments, some with trepidation, others with aplomb.

Of my travels: The first was to New York. I was finally granted the opportunity to live in that great city. Due to work, I stayed there for the first two months of 2009. I managed to walk Central Park, witness the Met, see the Bronx botanical garden and feast on pizza from Brooklyn. I enjoyed that adventure. Needing some warmth, I headed south to the tropics and visited the old country for my next trip. I met some really nice people. Thanks to these good people I ventured into places I had not dared to prior. I met a giant in the history of the old city of Antigua, although tired by his advanced age, he was still possessed by love for his people.

On yet another trip, with my youngest son and my brother we visited the Alamo in San Antonio, where much blood was shed to take land that belongs to no one but all of humanity. On another trip, I went to San Francisco where cupid finally caught up with me. That's right, mid-year I met a girl who would gain momentum and become important in my life.

Araceli came into my hectic life, quietly and calmly; but as striking as lightning and just as powerfully my life would change. She would go from friend to girlfriend, from girlfriend to my partner in a short period of time. Together full of hopes and dreams for the coming year we see this one come to a close.

My kids: All in good health, growing taller and stronger every day. Christine is now in college finishing her last two years. Caroline, Connor and Calvin added inches in height and pounds to their weight. Soon, they’ll enter adolescence and sooner, rather than later, they will be the ones teaching me about technology.

Work forced me to grow and increase my skills. The challenges, I find, are more social than technical. In the new industry customers are much more demanding but much less accountable. 2010 will find me working between here and San Francisco. I must admit to some worry about the serious economic situation we are all in. In the new company, with each cut we hope it is the last one. Fret not however, I can always fall back on my Spanish—a requirement at some fast food joints around here.

Of 2009 I keep all the best moments, the others I toss out. I gained new friends and with those with whom the distance grew, I hope a future opportunity bring us back. I am grateful with everyone for the opportunity to share in the warmth of our friendship. I wish you a safe and joyous holiday season.

Marco
